Today we are privileged to showcase Kamalpreet Kaur’s experience at Canadore College. Kamalpreet is an accomplished alumna of both the Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Personal Support Worker (PSW) programs.
Kamalpreet came to Canadore College from India having already earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Education, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Science. She had also worked as a Postgraduate Teacher there. “When I arrived in Canada, I wanted to build on this foundation in a way that allowed me to work more directly with vulnerable populations,” she shares.
Kamalpreet was drawn to Canadore College because of its excellent reputation for hands-on learning, personalized student support, and strong partnerships with local organizations. “Canadore’s focus on experiential learning and its warm, inclusive community made it the ideal place for me to grow personally and professionally,” she says.
“Canadore’s focus on experiential learning and its warm, inclusive community made it the ideal place for me to grow personally and professionally.”
“The college offered in-depth classroom instruction, lab-based training, and simulation activities that helped me develop confidence before entering real placements,” she shares. “The mentorship and ongoing support from faculty, especially Ms. Nancy Bush and Caitlyn Rueck, helped me prepare emotionally and professionally. They provided valuable feedback and always encouraged me to push myself and grow. Their guidance helped bridge the gap between my past experience and the Canadian context, making my transition into experiential learning much smoother. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to them.”
In the ECE program, Kamalpreet participated in placements where she worked directly with children. “My responsibilities included observing developmental milestones, planning and implementing educational activities, assisting children with routines such as snack time and transitions, and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and stimulating environment. I also communicated with parents and collaborated with fellow educators to support children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development,” she says. She graduated from the ECE program in 2024.
Next, in the PSW program, Kamalpreet completed placements at Waters Edge Community (Sienna Senior Living) and Cassellholme. “I assisted elderly residents with personal care such as bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility support, and feeding. I learned to use mechanical lifts, follow care plans, document care routines, and respond to emergency situations with professionalism and calmness. I also learned about resident rights, infection prevention, and ethical decision-making in healthcare. These experiences helped me grow in empathy, resilience, and critical thinking while gaining practical insight into the needs of individuals with physical and cognitive impairments.”
Elaborating on her time at Waters Edge and Cassellholme, Kamalpreet shares: “These facilities welcomed me warmly and provided a structured, supportive learning environment. The staff members were highly professional and often took time to explain procedures, answer my questions, and guide me through complex care routines. I appreciated the collaborative spirit.” But what she valued most of all was developing meaningful connections with residents: “Listening to their stories, helping with their daily routines, and offering companionship gave me a sense of fulfilment and purpose. It reaffirmed my passion for caregiving.” Kamalpreet graduated from the PSW program in 2025.
In addition to preparing her for professional roles, Kamalpreet shares that her experiential learning experiences have had a direct impact on her daily life. “My time management and organizational skills have improved significantly, and I apply these skills when managing household tasks or supporting my family,” she says. “My ability to interact with people of different backgrounds and needs has also improved, making me more empathetic and patient. Whether I am planning activities for children, preparing nutritious meals, or offering support to elderly individuals in my community, I rely on the competencies I developed through experiential learning.”
“For newcomers to Canada like myself, Experiential Learning also offers an opportunity to understand Canadian workplace expectations, cultural norms, and professional communication styles,” she adds. “Having already worked as a teacher in India, I thought I knew what to expect, but these experiences added new layers to my understanding.”
Kamalpreet offers excellent advice to other students: “Take every moment of your placement seriously. Be punctual, ask questions, and take initiative. Never hesitate to seek help or feedback from your mentors—they want to see you succeed. Be respectful, open-minded, and professional at all times. Reflect on your experiences regularly—keep a record of what you’ve learned, what went well, and what you could improve. These reflections can be valuable when preparing for interviews or future jobs. Lastly, be kind to yourself—growth comes through effort, and every challenge is a learning opportunity.”
Kamalpreet concludes by reflecting fondly on her path so far. “I am proud of how far I’ve come, and I am excited to apply my diverse background, combined with my Canadian education and training, to support children, families, and seniors in our community,” she shares.
