Glenn’s Career in Mental Health

Canadore College played a significant role in preparing me for the workforce in a variety of meaningful ways. Through numerous class presentations, I developed greater confidence in public speaking and enhanced my ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively. These experiences also deepened my understanding of the subject matter and taught me the importance of being well-prepared and knowledgeable when presenting to others.

Additionally, the program helped me cultivate strong time management and organizational skills, particularly in meeting project deadlines and balancing academic responsibilities. The wide range of topics covered throughout the Mental Health and Addictions program allowed me to discover where my true interests and strengths lie within the field.

Returning to school at the age of 56 was a life-changing decision—one that had been on my mind for years. Like many, I allowed day-to-day responsibilities and the fear of failure to delay my career change. However, choosing to pursue further education became one of the most positive and empowering steps I’ve taken in decades.

By my second semester, I began to feel more self-assured, even though I continued to face challenges with the workload. It was during this time that I truly became aware of the many student supports available, which made a significant difference in my success.

Enrolling in the Mental Health and Addictions program felt like a natural choice for me. I’ve always had a strong desire to help others who are struggling, and my lived experience, involvement in 12-step programs, and many hours of volunteer work provided a solid foundation for this path.

If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone considering this journey, it would be this: volunteer, stay engaged, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The connections you make and the experience you gain are invaluable.

I am deeply grateful for the incredible instructors, staff, and peers who supported me throughout my time at Canadore. Their guidance and encouragement have made a lasting impact on both my personal and professional life.
