Honouring Courage: Recognizing Resilience on World Refugee Day
Jun 20, 2025

Through its ongoing collaboration with World University Service Canada (WUSC) and its Student Refugee Program (SRP), Canadore College has made a real difference in the lives of refugee students here in the beautiful community of North Bay. Through funding from partners like guard.me and committed WUSC campus and community volunteers, Canadore has accepted a number of refugee students and provided them with scholarships which help cover tuition, living expenses, and settlement help as part of this nationwide effort.
This partnership aligns with Canadore’s mission of “Holistic, Authentic and Ethical Internationalization.” It brings diversity to classrooms while offering refugee students a chance at rebuilding their lives through education and community support.
With this year's topic being "In Solidarity with Refugees," Canadore College's actions on June 20, 2025, World Refugee Day, serve as an effective demonstration of how educational institutions can go beyond words to take significant action. Canadore is providing hope, dignity, and a new beginning, in addition to education through its collaboration with WUSC. When refugee students first arrive on campus, they are embraced by a caring community that supports them as they work towards their goals, rebuild their lives, and give back to the community. Canadore demonstrates that solidarity entails supporting and enabling people most in need by opening its doors and hearts.
At Canadore, “Great Things Happen Here” isn’t just a slogan - it’s a promise. And through programs like the Student Refugee Program, that promise is fulfilled in the most meaningful ways, proving that when communities come together in solidarity, lives are transformed.
